The Meghalaya Police have made significant progress in the case of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore tourist who was found dead during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife, surrendered to the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district on Sunday night. According to authorities, she gave herself up due to mounting pressure.
Concurrently, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) apprehended three individuals believed to be contract killers hired by Sonam to murder her husband. One arrest was made in Uttar Pradesh, while the other two occurred in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The operation to capture remaining individuals potentially involved in the crime is still underway in Madhya Pradesh.
The sequence of events began on May 21 when Raja and Sonam arrived in Shillong for their honeymoon. They traveled to Sohra (Cherrapunjee) on May 22, and on May 23, they embarked on a trek to Nongriat, known for its double-decker living root bridge. Contact with the couple was lost after this. Raja's family filed a missing person complaint, which led to a large-scale search operation. Despite challenging terrain, including steep valleys and dense forest trails, Raja's body was discovered on June 2.
The case has drawn considerable attention, with Raja's family initially demanding a CBI inquiry, alleging slow progress by the Meghalaya Police. Sonam's family, on the other hand, questioned the assumption that she was dead. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has praised the police for their swift action in cracking the case.
Following Sonam's surrender, she was taken to Sadar Hospital for a medical check-up and is currently being held at a One Stop Centre. Meghalaya Police intend to bring Sonam back to Meghalaya for court proceedings. While the police have not yet disclosed the motive, Sonam's surrender and the arrest of the alleged hitmen strongly suggest her involvement in orchestrating the murder.
Meanwhile, Sonam's father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, has defended his daughter, asserting her innocence. He alleges that the Meghalaya Police are framing her to conceal their own investigative shortcomings. He has called for a CBI inquiry into the matter, claiming that a proper investigation would reveal the Meghalaya Police's responsibility.
