Speculation is mounting that Cyprus may host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a brief refuelling stop as he travels to Canada for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, scheduled for June 15-17. While official confirmations are pending, this stopover presents a unique opportunity for bilateral discussions between the leaders of India and Cyprus, potentially strengthening the ties between the two nations.
This potential visit occurs against the backdrop of already strengthening relations between India and Cyprus. In May 2025, India's High Commissioner to Cyprus, Shri Manish, highlighted the growing strategic partnership, emphasizing India's support for Cyprus's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Discussions have also focused on expanding economic cooperation in key sectors like maritime connectivity, fintech, and renewable energy. The recent launch of the India-Greece-Cyprus Business & Investment Council (IGC) further underscores this trilateral collaboration, aiming to accelerate trade, investment, and strategic cooperation across various sectors.
Cyprus holds a significant position as one of the top ten investors in India, with both nations expressing interest in enhancing trade in goods and services. India's large market and growing technology sector complement Cyprus's strategic location and expertise in shipping and financial services, creating mutually beneficial economic opportunities. Areas identified for expanded relations include pharmaceuticals, financial services, and digital infrastructure. India's expertise in IT and digital transformation, particularly with innovations like the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), can support Cyprus in enhancing its digital infrastructure and economic efficiency.
Furthermore, defense cooperation between India and Cyprus is on the rise. A Bilateral Defence Cooperation Programme (BDCP) for 2025 was signed in Nicosia in January 2025, following a Memorandum of Understanding on Defence and Military Cooperation in December 2022. A Cypriot Defence Delegation also participated in AERO India 2025 in Bengaluru, engaging in discussions to enhance defense cooperation.
If the refuelling stop materializes, it could serve as an opportunity to solidify these existing partnerships and explore new avenues for collaboration. High-level discussions could cover a range of topics, including trade, investment, technology, and regional security. Given Cyprus's location as a gateway to Europe, it could play a crucial role in India's outreach to European markets, while Cyprus benefits from access to India's dynamic economy.
However, the invitation to Prime Minister Modi for the G7 summit has not been without controversy. Some members of Canada's Sikh community have criticized the decision, citing concerns over strained relations and allegations against the Indian government. Despite these concerns, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended the invitation, emphasizing India's importance as the world's fifth-largest economy and a key player in global supply chains.
Despite these challenges, the potential meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Cypriot leaders signifies the growing importance of the India-Cyprus relationship. A successful bilateral meeting could pave the way for increased cooperation and mutual prosperity, further strengthening the bonds between the two nations.
