The honeymoon trip to Meghalaya for Raja Raghuvanshi, a 29-year-old businessman from Indore, and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, has ended in tragedy and intrigue. Raja was found dead in a gorge, and Sonam has resurfaced over 1,200 kilometers away in Uttar Pradesh, now arrested in connection with his murder.
The couple had married on May 11, 2025, and embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20. They visited Shillong and other scenic spots before disappearing on May 23. According to a tourist guide, they were last seen trekking near Sohra (Cherrapunji) with three men who spoke Hindi. On June 2, Raja's body was discovered in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls. His jewelry was missing, and a bloodstained machete was found nearby, turning what initially seemed like an accidental death into a murder investigation.
Initially, Sonam was also considered missing, with her family suggesting she might have been abducted. However, the police investigation took a dramatic turn when Sonam was found at a roadside 'dhaba' in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, June 9. Meghalaya Police claim she surrendered to the authorities, while Uttar Pradesh police initially reported she was found in a disheveled state and taken to a medical facility before her arrest.
Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang revealed that Sonam is accused of orchestrating Raja's murder with the help of her alleged paramour, Raj Kushwaha, and hiring three contract killers. Three men have been arrested in connection to the case, one in Uttar Pradesh and two in Indore. They have reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that Sonam hired them to kill Raja. An autopsy revealed that Raja had suffered sharp wounds to the head.
The motive behind the alleged murder appears to be an extramarital affair. Police say Sonam was involved with Raj Kushwaha, who allegedly helped plan the murder. Raja's family members have stated that Raj Kushwaha was Sonam's employee and that she used to spend hours talking to him.
The case has sparked outrage and disbelief. Raja's family is demanding a CBI investigation, expressing distrust in the local police's handling of the case. Sonam's father, Devi Singh, insists on her innocence and claims she is being framed. Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, expressed her shock and demanded the harshest punishment for Sonam if she is found guilty. She revealed that Raja was initially reluctant to go on the honeymoon and that Sonam had booked the tickets for the trip.
Adding another layer to the bizarre turn of events, social media users have drawn a parallel to a 2016 meme, "Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai," which translates to "Sonam Gupta is unfaithful." The meme resurfaced after Sonam Raghuvanshi's arrest, highlighting the public's fascination with the case.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to Raja's death and to determine the full extent of Sonam's involvement. The families of both the victim and the accused are seeking answers and justice, hoping the truth will emerge amidst the conflicting claims and shocking revelations.
