Assam police have affected a major drug seizure, confiscating narcotics valued at ₹45 crore and apprehending four individuals in connection with the crime. The successful operation was announced on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the state's commitment to combating drug trafficking.
In one specific operation that occurred earlier, on December 24, 2024, Sribhumi police, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted a truck in the Hathikhira area. The vehicle was found to be transporting 1.5 lakh YABA tablets, weighing over 16 kilograms, which were being smuggled from a neighboring state. The estimated value of this single consignment was also around ₹45 crore. One person was arrested at the scene, and investigations are ongoing to dismantle the broader network involved. YABA tablets are a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine.
Chief Minister Sarma took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to commend the Assam Police for their efforts. He reiterated the government's determination to eradicate drug networks within the state.
These recent successes underscore the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies in the northeastern region to tackle the persistent issue of drug smuggling. Just a day earlier, on June 9, 2025, a joint team in Manipur seized approximately 8 kg of heroin worth ₹54.29 crore and 6.7 kg of opium valued at ₹87.57 lakh in Churachandpur, further demonstrating the scale of the problem and the coordinated responses being implemented.
These are not isolated incidents. In April 2025, authorities in Goa seized over 4 kg of cocaine, worth ₹43 crore, which was concealed in chocolates and coffee packets. This led to the arrest of three individuals and an investigation into potential international links, illustrating the diverse methods used by drug traffickers and the widespread nature of their operations.
