Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu met in Male on Friday, marking a significant step towards mending strained bilateral relations. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations, focused on strengthening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, defense, and infrastructure.
The talks come after a period of unease in India-Maldives relations, triggered by the "India Out" campaign and diplomatic disputes. Muizzu, who assumed office in November 2023, had advocated for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, a move that initially strained ties. Despite these initial tensions, both leaders expressed a commitment to fostering a stronger partnership.
A key outcome of the meeting was the announcement of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the Maldives. This initiative aims to significantly boost the economic partnership between the two South Asian neighbors. In addition to the FTA, India is expected to extend a line of credit worth $565 million to the Maldives.
Discussions also covered cooperation in defense and security, with India handing over 72 vehicles and other equipment to the Maldivian defense ministry. This move underscores India's commitment to supporting the Maldives in maintaining its security and stability.
Climate change was another important topic of discussion. As island nations, both India and the Maldives are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The leaders explored potential collaborations in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable development.
The meeting between Modi and Muizzu is being viewed as a positive step towards resetting India-Maldives relations. Former Maldives foreign minister Abdulla Shahid noted that Modi's visit indicated Muizzu had "decided to step back and correct the narrative".
During his address, PM Modi emphasized the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations, highlighting that the relationship extends beyond mere neighborliness. He released commemorative stamps displaying traditional boats of both nations, symbolizing their shared heritage and journey.
The Indian Foreign Secretary had earlier affirmed that the Maldives is a "very important partner" in India's Neighborhood First policy and its MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision. This underscores the strategic importance India places on its relationship with the Maldives in the Indian Ocean region.
