Sonam Raghuvanshi, a 24-year-old woman from Indore, has been sent to a 72-hour transit remand after surrendering to the Uttar Pradesh Police in Ghazipur on Monday. She is accused of plotting the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The remand order was issued late Monday night after Sonam was presented before a local court. Following the court's approval, a Meghalaya Police team took her into custody.
The case has gained significant attention, with authorities working to piece together the events leading to Raja Raghuvanshi's death. The couple had traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon on May 20, shortly after their wedding on May 11. They were reported missing on May 23 from Sohra, East Khasi Hills. Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong waterfalls.
Meghalaya's Director General of Police (DGP), I Nongrang, stated that Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly murdered by individuals hired by Sonam. According to investigators, Sonam was having an affair with a man named Raj Kushwaha, who allegedly helped her plan the murder. Kushwaha was reportedly seen at Raja’s funeral in Indore.
In connection with the case, police have arrested five suspects, including Sonam. Akash Rajput was apprehended in Lalitpur, while two others were arrested from Indore.
Sonam's surrender in Ghazipur followed a multi-state search effort. She was found at 'Kashi Dhaba' on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. According to Ghazipur SP Iraz Raja, Sonam was taken to Sadar Hospital for a medical examination and then held at a one-stop center that provides assistance to women in distress. A dhaba employee revealed that Sonam had asked to use a phone to call her parents in Indore, which allowed the Madhya Pradesh Police to trace her location and alert the Uttar Pradesh Police.
The Meghalaya Police team arrived in Ghazipur on Monday evening and took Sonam into custody from the one-stop center around 6:30 pm. She was then taken to the district court, where the 72-hour transit remand was granted around 11 pm. She was then taken by road to Patna and is scheduled to be flown back to Meghalaya.
According to East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, the murder weapon was identified as a tool typically used to chop trees, and an autopsy confirmed multiple sharp injuries on Raja's body.
Sonam's father has rejected the allegations against his daughter, claiming that the Meghalaya Police are fabricating the case. He has demanded a CBI inquiry and stated that Sonam told him she was innocent.
