A tense scene unfolded at the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, when a passenger slapped one of the accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case. The incident occurred as a team of Meghalaya Police, assisted by the Indore Crime Branch, was escorting the four accused through the airport for a flight to Shillong, where they will face further interrogation and investigation.
The shocking murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has gripped the nation. Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam, is the prime accused in the case, suspected of conspiring with her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, to orchestrate her husband's death. Police have arrested Kushwaha, along with Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi, as accomplices in the crime.
As the police were transferring the accused through the airport, a bystander, later identified as Sushil Lakwani, lunged forward and slapped one of them. The sudden act caused a brief commotion, but the Shillong Police swiftly intervened and secured the accused, ensuring they were safely moved inside the airport. Videos of the incident quickly circulated on social media, reflecting the public's raw emotions and anger surrounding the case.
Lakwani, an Indore resident, expressed his outrage to reporters, stating that he acted out of anger and grief that a resident of Indore was brutally murdered. He further asserted that all those involved in the heinous crime should be hanged until death.
The Meghalaya Police team has secured transit custody of all four accused. They were taken to Delhi by flight, and will then travel to Guwahati by a connecting flight, and finally proceed to Shillong. All five accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, were presented in district court before being sent to transit custody. Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that some of the accused have already confessed to the crime.
The case took a dramatic turn when Raja Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam, who had been missing since May 23, surrendered to Uttar Pradesh Police in Ghazipur. According to police reports, Sonam conspired with Raj Kushwaha, who worked at a tile distribution company owned by Sonam's brother, to kill Raja. Kushwaha allegedly hired the other three men to carry out the murder.
Adding another layer to the already complex case, Lakshman Singh Rathore, an attendee at Raja Raghuvanshi's funeral, revealed that Raj Kushwaha, Sonam's alleged boyfriend, drove one of the vehicles arranged by her family to transport people to the funeral.
The investigation continues to unfold, with police examining the level of premeditation and complicity among Sonam's immediate circle.
