BTS's RM, the leader of the globally renowned K-pop group, has recently opened up about his challenging experience during his mandatory military service. In a candid live session with fans following his discharge on June 10, 2025, RM, also known as Kim Namjoon, revealed that he suffered from severe insomnia while serving in the military, impacting his mental and physical well-being.
RM confessed that the pressure of military enlistment and the unfamiliar environment contributed significantly to his sleep issues. He described the difficulty of adjusting to communal living, where the varied sleeping habits of his fellow soldiers, including snoring and teeth grinding, made it nearly impossible for him to rest. The intensity of the situation led to RM experiencing sleepless stretches of up to 78 hours, a revelation that shocked and concerned his fans. He described feeling like a "zombie," mentally and physically drained, and developing a fear of nightfall due to his inability to sleep.
The lack of sleep took a toll on RM's ability to focus and create music, a core part of his identity and passion. He admitted that for the first time since he was 14, he found himself unable to write music and instead turned to journaling as a coping mechanism.
Recognizing the severity of his condition, RM sought professional help from a neuropsychiatrist. He has been on medication for over a year to manage his insomnia. RM openly shared that he still relies on sleeping pills to get rest, highlighting the ongoing nature of his struggle. He expressed hope that with his military service completed and a return to a more regular routine, he will eventually be able to discontinue the medication.
RM's decision to speak openly about his mental health challenges has been met with widespread praise from fans and mental health advocates. His vulnerability in sharing his struggles helps to destigmatize mental health issues, particularly among celebrities who often face immense pressure to maintain a perfect image. By sharing his experience, RM is encouraging open conversations about anxiety, insomnia, and the importance of seeking help when needed.
Beyond his personal struggles, RM also shared insights into his overall military experience. He lived in a container at the Hwacheon military base and initially found it difficult to adjust to the close living quarters and the routines of military life. He was advised to set aside his identity as RM of BTS to ease his transition. RM also humorously mentioned being scolded and tasked with looking after V (Kim Taehyung), despite feeling that V adapted to military life more seamlessly than he did.
Despite the hardships, RM conveyed a message of hope and resilience. He assured fans that he is on a path to recovery and feels "a little better now." He also expressed his deep gratitude to ARMYs (BTS's fanbase) for their unwavering support during his time away. RM also teased the upcoming BTS album, hinting that it would be a "huge" release, further exciting fans about the group's future activities.
