In a significant move to inspire students with tales of bravery and sacrifice, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has incorporated chapters on the lives of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma into its school syllabus. These additions will be included in Class VIII (Urdu), Class VII (Urdu), and Class VIII (English) textbooks, respectively, starting this academic year.
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the first officer to be conferred with the rank of Field Marshal, is celebrated for his exceptional leadership and strategic brilliance, particularly during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. His inclusion aims to highlight his pivotal role in India's victory. Brigadier Mohammad Usman, a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, is remembered for his unwavering commitment to India during the Partition, choosing India over Pakistan. He made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting in the 1947-48 Kashmir War. Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, is honored for his extraordinary courage and sacrifice during the Battle of Badgam in the 1947-48 conflict.
The introduction of these chapters is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Education, and NCERT. This initiative aims to integrate the National War Memorial (NWM) and related themes into the school curriculum, establishing the NWM as a prominent national landmark. By learning about these war legends, students will not only gain insights into India's military history but also cultivate essential life skills such as resilience, empathy, and emotional intelligence.
The objective is to instill a sense of patriotism, national spirit, and belonging among the younger generation. The stories of these heroes are expected to resonate deeply with students, fostering a stronger connection to their nation and its values.
