The recent murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has brought intense scrutiny on his relationship with his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, and the circumstances leading up to their marriage. The couple's arranged marriage, which occurred on May 11 in Indore, has become the subject of much speculation, especially regarding Sonam's feelings towards Raja and her alleged pre-existing relationship with Raj Kushwaha.
According to Raja's cousin, Arpit, the families of Raja and Sonam were not previously acquainted. They connected through a matrimonial application commonly used by Raghuvanshi families seeking suitable matches for their children. Following initial contact, the families met a few times and visited each other, eventually deciding to proceed with the marriage. The wedding date was finalized on February 10 at Sonam's residence.
However, Raja's cousin also revealed that Raja had difficulty communicating with Sonam over the phone before the wedding. He mentioned that Raja often complained about not being able to talk to Sonam properly, suggesting a possible disconnect between them even before the marriage.
Adding another layer to the story, Raja's elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, told police that Sonam had confided in her mother about her affair with Raj Kushwaha, who worked as an accountant at her family's business. According to Vipin, Sonam's mother objected to her relationship with Raj and persuaded her to marry within their community. NDTV reported that Sonam reluctantly agreed to marry Raja but allegedly warned her family of dire consequences, stating, "You will see what I do to that person. You all will have to bear the consequences."
Sonam's father, Devi Singh, has a different perspective. He stated that Sonam agreed to marry Raja like any other arranged marriage setup. He claimed that they had asked her if she had someone else in mind, but she denied it. He told Times of India that when they discussed the proposal, Sonam was with a friend, and he clearly asked her if she had someone else in mind. She immediately said no and said she would marry whoever he chose for her, even asking her friend to tell him not to bring up such questions again, as she fully trusted his decision.
Adding to the complexity, Raja Raghuvanshi's family has also claimed that Sonam married him to remove a "mangal dosh" in her horoscope. According to Raja's brother, Sachin, Sonam was a "manglik," and her family wanted her to marry Raja, who also had the same astrological condition. They approached Raja's family with the proposal, despite knowing that Sonam was in love with Raj.
These conflicting accounts paint a complex picture of the relationship between Raja and Sonam before their marriage. While Raja's family suggests Sonam was unhappy and even warned them of potential consequences, Sonam's father claims she willingly agreed to the marriage. The truth likely lies somewhere in between, with the added element of the alleged affair with Raj Kushwaha further complicating the situation. The ongoing police investigation is expected to shed more light on the events and motives that led to Raja Raghuvanshi's tragic death.
