Panjab University (PU) is taking a firm stance against drug abuse by implementing a strict new policy. As part of this initiative, students will be required to sign an undertaking to abstain from drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. This pledge also includes consent to undergo random drug testing. Students who violate this policy will face disciplinary action.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by Panjab University to combat substance abuse on campus. In May 2025, the university formed five committees comprising wardens to check hostels for drug abuse and ensure cleanliness and food quality. These committees will send detailed reports to the Dean Students Welfare (DSW). According to DSW Amit Chauhan, Panjab University will involve parents if any cases of drug abuse come to light. He also noted that there had been no recovery of drugs or related substances from hostels since November, and these measures are being taken preemptively. However, these measures have been heightened since a drug overdose death in hostel number 7 in November of last year.
Panjab University Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig has emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating that the youth are the backbone of the nation, and their well-being is vital for the nation's progress. She urged students to not only say no to drugs but also report drug promoters and peddlers to the concerned authorities.
The university's commitment extends beyond internal measures. Panjab University actively participated in the "Nashe Se Door, Jiyo Bharpur" campaign for a drug-free Chandigarh. The Vice Chancellor and over 200 students took part in a padyatra to raise awareness against drug abuse.
These efforts align with broader national initiatives to combat drug abuse among youth. Other institutions, such as Punjab Engineering College (PEC), have also organized pledge-taking ceremonies and awareness campaigns. These collective efforts highlight a growing concern and a commitment to creating a drug-free environment for students in Punjab.
