In a recent operation, Ambala Police have successfully rescued 23 individuals from an illegal drug de-addiction center operating in the Saha area. The raid was carried out following a tip-off, with a joint team of police and Health Department officials inspecting the facility.
The center was operating without a valid license, although the operator had applied for a provisional one. This made their activities illegal, endangering the lives and well-being of the individuals seeking help with their addiction. The rescued individuals were immediately taken to Civil Hospital Ambala Cantonment for psychiatric evaluation and medical examinations. Afterward, efforts were made to reunite them with their families.
Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Mukesh stated that they received information about the illegal operation from the SP office. The authorities acted swiftly to ensure the safety and well-being of the individuals housed at the center.
This is not the first instance of illegal de-addiction centers being discovered in the Ambala district. In October 2023, a joint team of the health department and the district police inspected an illegal drug de-addiction center at Matheri Shekhan village and rescued 32 people. The facility, operating under the name of Shri Balaji Foundation Drug Counselling and Rehabilitation Centre, was found to be running without registration and in poor condition. The rescued individuals had been admitted to the center for periods ranging from three to ten months. Disturbingly, there were reports that the center operators subjected the patients to physical abuse. A case was registered against several individuals in connection with the operation of the illegal center.
These repeated incidents raise concerns about the regulation and monitoring of de-addiction centers in the region. While there are officially 12 de-addiction centers and five rehabilitation centers in the district, the existence of illegal operations highlights the need for stricter oversight. Authorities must ensure that all such facilities meet the required standards of care and are properly registered and licensed. It is also essential to conduct regular inspections to prevent abuse and ensure the well-being of patients.
The discovery of illegal de-addiction centers also underscores the challenges faced by individuals struggling with addiction and their families. Seeking help for addiction is a difficult decision, and families often place their trust in these centers to provide proper care and support. However, the existence of illegal and unregulated facilities puts vulnerable individuals at risk of exploitation and abuse.
Increased awareness among the public about the importance of choosing registered and licensed de-addiction centers is crucial. Families should verify the credentials of any facility before admitting a loved one. Additionally, a robust system for reporting suspected illegal operations can help authorities take timely action and prevent further harm. The Ambala Police's recent action serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and enforcement in protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.
