The Hockey Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place in Rajgir, Bihar, from August 29 to September 7. In a recent turn of events, Pakistan and Oman have been replaced by Bangladesh and Kazakhstan, respectively. With the updated team list, the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) has announced the revised schedule for the tournament.

Team Composition and Pools

The participating nations have been divided into two pools. Pool A consists of India, Japan, China, and Kazakhstan, while Pool B includes Malaysia, Korea, Bangladesh, and Chinese Taipei.

Reasons for Team Replacements

Pakistan's withdrawal from the Asia Cup 2025 is attributed to security concerns, particularly due to heightened tensions with India. Meanwhile, Oman's withdrawal was unexpected, with sources suggesting financial constraints as the reason. Bangladesh and Kazakhstan, who finished third and fourth respectively in the AHF Cup, have been invited to fill the vacant spots.

India's Schedule

As hosts, India will begin their campaign against China on the opening day, August 29. Following the opener, India will face Japan on August 31 and Kazakhstan on September 1.

Tournament Format

The tournament will follow a double-round robin format during the pool stage. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Super 4s stage, where they will play each other once. The top two teams from the Super 4s will then compete in the final. The final match is scheduled for September 7.

Significance of the Asia Cup 2025

The Asia Cup 2025 serves as a qualifier for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, which will be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. The winner of the Asia Cup will secure a direct spot in the World Cup.

AHF President Fumio Ogura expressed his confidence in the tournament, stating, "The Asia Cup Rajgir Bihar 2025 will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia".

Other Updates

The Women's Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 5 to 14. The participating teams include China, Korea, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Thailand, and Singapore.
