Amit Jani, the producer of the controversial film 'Udaipur Files,' has been granted Y-category security by the central government following alleged death threats. The film is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was murdered for allegedly sharing a social media post supporting controversial remarks made by Nupur Sharma about Prophet Muhammad. The case sparked nationwide outrage.
The Y-category security detail for Jani will consist of 11 personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). This security cover will be provided to Jani during his movements within Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The decision to grant Jani security came after the Supreme Court allowed the producer, director, and Kanhaiya Lal's son to seek police protection, noting that authorities should take steps to ensure their safety if the threats were found to be serious.
Amit Jani expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for providing the security.
'Udaipur Files' has faced numerous legal and censorship hurdles. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) initially cleared the film with six modifications. The Supreme Court directed those objecting to the film's release to approach the Delhi High Court, which is scheduled to hear the matter on July 28, 2025.
The film's release date has been pushed back from July 11 to August 8, 2025, due to these legal and censorship issues. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting directed the filmmakers to implement six specific changes before its release, following recommendations from a screening committee.
Directed by Bharat S Shrinate and co-written by Amit Jani, Bharat Singh, and Jayant Sinha, 'Udaipur Files' features Vijay Raaz. The film has already garnered significant attention, even before its release, due to its sensitive subject matter.
In India, security cover is provided based on threat perception assessments. The 'Y' category is granted to individuals facing moderate-level threats and includes 4-5 armed commandos for personal security, secure transportation, and round-the-clock protection. This level of security is typically assigned to politicians, high-profile businesspersons, and individuals at risk due to their public roles. The decision to provide security to Jani highlights the heightened tensions surrounding the film's release, which has already drawn legal challenges and public debate.
