Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai recently expressed his deep affection for Srinagar, describing it as a "paradise on Earth" and a place where he feels completely at home. Addressing the North Zone Regional Conference of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in Srinagar, CJI Gavai's remarks highlighted the region's natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and the importance of secular values in the area.
During his address, CJI Gavai quoted a famous Persian couplet: "Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast," which translates to "If there is a paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, and it is only here". He stated he was happy to have the opportunity to visit Kashmir again, a place known as paradise, and expressed gratitude for the love he has consistently received from the people. He also mentioned that he has visited all parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
CJI Gavai lauded Kashmir's valleys, mountains, rivers and streams, emphasizing that these features solidify its reputation as a true paradise. He also spoke about Kashmir's 3,000-year-old civilizational heritage and its rich culture. He further credited Sufism for promoting secularism, a value enshrined in the Indian Constitution. He noted that people of all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs, visit Dargahs, temples, and Gurudwaras in the region.
In addition to praising the beauty and culture of the region, CJI Gavai stressed the importance of citizens being aware of their rights. He stated that rights are meaningless without knowledge and highlighted the necessity of rectifying past issues in Kashmir to restore harmony among all communities. He emphasized the role of judges and lawyers in ensuring that justice reaches every citizen, especially those in remote areas. He also promised to communicate the concerns of the legal community in Ladakh and Kashmir to the relevant authorities.
CJI Gavai's visit to Srinagar marks his first since assuming his position and following the abrogation of Article 370. His presence at the North Zone Regional Conference of NALSA underscores the commitment to strengthening the legal framework and promoting justice in the region. The conference saw participation from numerous judges, including those from the Supreme Court and Chief Justices of High Courts from across North India.
Moreover, CJI Gavai attended the 'Mega Alumni Meet 2025' at the University of Kashmir, where he expressed his belief that the university will continue to produce students who will contribute to the development of the Union Territory and the nation. He encouraged the university to leverage its alumni to benefit younger generations, so that they can gain from their experiences.
CJI Gavai's sentiments echo previous statements made by other legal figures. In 2023, then CJI D.Y. Chandrachud highlighted the "mainstreaming of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh" during a National Legal Services Authority meet in Srinagar.
