In a notable event, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray visited Matoshree, the residence of the Thackeray family, to greet his cousin and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on his 65th birthday. This visit marks Raj Thackeray's first return to Matoshree in many years, with some sources reporting it as the first in 13 years. Senior MNS leaders Bala Nandgaonkar and Nitin Sardesai accompanied Raj. Uddhav Thackeray, along with Sanjay Raut, welcomed Raj at the entrance of Matoshree, a well-known landmark in Mumbai. Raj presented Uddhav with a bouquet of red roses.
Raj Thackeray acknowledged Uddhav as the "Shiv Sena chief" in a social media post, where he shared a photo of the visit with Balasaheb Thackeray's portrait in the background. Uddhav expressed that his happiness "multiplied manifold" after Raj's visit, noting that it had been many years since Raj had come to Matoshree.
This visit gains significance as it follows a recent joint appearance by the two leaders at a public rally in Mumbai, where they addressed issues concerning the Marathi language and community. This was their first time sharing a political stage in 20 years. At the rally, Uddhav Thackeray suggested the possibility of contesting upcoming civic polls together, signaling a potential political alliance. He stated, "We have come together to stay together... We have united to protect Marathi,". Raj Thackeray had also remarked that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had managed to bring him and Uddhav together, something even Balasaheb Thackeray couldn't achieve.
The meeting at Matoshree is viewed as a possible indication of easing tensions and improving relations between the cousins. While Raj had last formally visited Matoshree in 2012 during Balasaheb Thackeray's final days, he briefly visited in January 2019 to invite Uddhav and his family to his son Amit Thackeray's wedding. This recent visit has sparked speculation across the state's political circles, especially with the upcoming Mumbai municipal corporation elections. However, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has downplayed any political angle, stating that the meeting should be viewed as a matter of joy and simply for birthday wishes.
Despite the speculations, the meeting is seen as a personal and political milestone for the Thackeray family. Raj's visit to Matoshree marks a symbolic reunion and a potential shift in the political dynamics of Maharashtra.
