India's space sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, driven by innovation and significant private sector participation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently championed this progress, emphasizing the nation's renewed energy in science and technology in the 21st century.
In his recent Mann Ki Baat address, PM Modi celebrated the return of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla from space, noting the wave of happiness and pride that swept the country. He also highlighted the growing curiosity among children about space exploration, with many now aspiring to become space scientists. This surge in interest can be attributed to the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 in August 2023, which created a new ambience and sparked curiosity about science and space.
The Prime Minister also lauded the rapid increase in space startups in India, noting that the number has grown from fewer than 50 five years ago to over 200 today. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has credited this revolutionary shift to PM Modi's visionary leadership over the past 11 years. He stated that India now boasts over 300 space startups, with several having global potential.
This burgeoning startup ecosystem is a vivid indicator of the sector's vitality. PM Modi specifically mentioned the INSPIRE-MANAK Abhiyan, which promotes innovation among children by providing them with a platform to develop innovative ideas rooted in science. Under this initiative, five children are selected from each school to present a new idea, and the number of participants has doubled after Chandrayaan-3.
India's space economy, currently valued at approximately $8.4 billion, is projected to grow five-fold to $44 billion in the near future, potentially reaching $77 billion by 2030. This ambitious growth is expected to be a primary driver of India's ascent to becoming the fourth-largest economy. Dr. Jitendra Singh has also shared that space medicine will be the next frontier, where India is already making breakthroughs.
PM Modi also mentioned "Operation Sindoor" as proof of India's enhanced scientific capacity, enabling effective defence against drone and missile attacks. He further praised Indian students who won medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Dubai and the International Mathematical Olympiad in Australia, highlighting India's strengthened position in the world of mathematics. The Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad will be held in Mumbai next month, with students from over 60 countries participating.
The Prime Minister has invited suggestions on how to celebrate National Space Day on August 23, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and promoting "vocal for local" as the strongest foundation for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
