Day 6 of the Parliament Monsoon Session is expected to be dominated by a special discussion on 'Operation Sindoor,' India's response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. The session began on a turbulent note on July 21 and, after a week of disruptions, is finally shifting gears to address critical issues of national security and foreign policy.
The Lok Sabha Secretariat has officially listed a "special discussion on India's strong, successful, and decisive 'Operation Sindoor' in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam" on its agenda for today. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is slated to initiate the discussion in the Lok Sabha. Following the Lok Sabha debate, the Rajya Sabha will take up the discussion on Operation Sindoor on Tuesday.
The opposition has been pressing for a debate on Operation Sindoor since the beginning of the Monsoon Session. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, are expected to spearhead the opposition's critique of the government. The opposition is likely to question the government on various aspects of the operation and its implications.
In response, the Modi government has hailed Operation Sindoor as a resounding success. Prime Minister Modi has asserted that the mission achieved "100% of its objectives" and demonstrated the capabilities of India's indigenous defense technology. He has also described the military operation as a "new normal" in India's counter-terrorism doctrine, emphasizing that India will no longer differentiate between terrorists and the regimes that support them. According to the Defence Ministry, the operation inflicted significant damage on several Pakistani airbases.
Prior to the agreement on the Operation Sindoor debate, the Monsoon Session faced significant disruptions due to the Opposition's demands to address multiple issues, including alleged irregularities in electoral roll revisions in Bihar. The Opposition raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar, alleging that it disproportionately disenfranchises marginalized voters.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) reiterated the readiness for a discussion on Operation Sindoor. Both the ruling NDA and the opposition have agreed to a 16-hour debate in the Lok Sabha, followed by a similar discussion in the Rajya Sabha. It is expected that the debate could extend longer than the allotted time. Key ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, are expected to participate in the debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to intervene in the discussion.
