The Monsoon Session of Parliament has been heavily disrupted due to opposition protests regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar and the demand for a debate on Operation Sindoor. These disruptions have led to repeated adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
The opposition, united under the INDIA bloc, has been vocally protesting the SIR exercise, alleging a lack of transparency and potential impact on electoral fairness. They are demanding a rollback of the voter roll revision and a full discussion on Operation Sindoor. The protests have included slogans and waving placards, causing significant disruptions to parliamentary proceedings.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has criticized the opposition's actions, calling them "double standards". He stated the government is ready for a discussion on these issues, questioning why the opposition is disrupting the House if they genuinely seek a debate. Rijiju also highlighted the cost to the public due to these disruptions. The government has allocated 16 hours in both the Lok Sabha (July 28) and Rajya Sabha (July 29) for a debate on Operation Sindoor. Rajnath Singh is expected to lead the discussion in the Lok Sabha, with participation from Amit Shah and S Jaishankar.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, convened an all-party meeting to address the logjam. This meeting aimed to find a consensus and ensure the smooth functioning of the House. Following the meeting, there was optimism that disruptions would cease, and the House could proceed with its agenda.
The opposition's protest has also extended outside the Parliament, with leaders staging demonstrations at the Makar Dwar. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was seen participating in these protests. Opposition MPs symbolically discarded copies of the SIR, conveying their demand to scrap the Election Commission's revision exercise.
Amidst the disruptions, the Lok Sabha paid tribute to Kargil war heroes, and the Rajya Sabha administered the oath of office to four new members from Tamil Nadu, including actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan. Despite these proceedings, the primary focus remained on the opposition's protests and the government's response.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) reports high voter participation in Bihar's revision exercise. However, the opposition continues to express concerns about the integrity and transparency of the process.
The resolution of this ongoing debate is crucial for the effective functioning of Parliament and the addressing of concerns surrounding electoral processes. The scheduled 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor in both houses is expected to provide a platform for detailed discussion and potential resolutions.
