Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu upon his arrival in Malé on Friday, marking a significant moment in India-Maldives relations. This visit, the first state visit hosted by President Muizzu since assuming office in November 2023, is viewed as a potential turning point after a period of strained ties. As PM Modi landed in the Maldives, chants of "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jai" resonated, reflecting the enthusiastic welcome from the Indian diaspora.
PM Modi's two-day state visit, which follows his trip to the United Kingdom, is at the invitation of President Muizzu. The visit coincides with the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations, where PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour, and also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. The Prime Minister's presence at the celebrations underscores India's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties amidst evolving regional dynamics in the Indian Ocean.
The Maldivian capital was adorned with Indian flags, posters, and banners to welcome PM Modi. Traditional dance performances were held to greet the Prime Minister upon his arrival. Key members of the Maldivian cabinet, including the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, and Minister of Homeland Security, were also present.
PM Modi's visit aims to reset relations and reinforce India's "Neighbourhood First" policy and its MAHASAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision for regional security. During the visit, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with President Muizzu and other political leaders to advance the joint vision of a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership. Both leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation across key sectors. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are also expected to be signed. Additionally, PM Modi will inaugurate India-backed development projects in the Maldives.
Ties between India and the Maldives have experienced some tension since President Muizzu, known for his pro-China leanings, assumed office. However, recent engagements suggest a pragmatic approach from both sides to recalibrate the relationship. Experts note that complexities and necessities have led India and the Maldives to emphasize quality and non-partisanship in shaping their relationship.
In his departure statement, PM Modi acknowledged the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He expressed his anticipation for meetings with President Muizzu and other political figures to strengthen cooperation for peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
Earlier in the United Kingdom, PM Modi met with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III. The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed during the UK visit, which aims to boost bilateral trade.
