Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his best wishes for good health to Jagdeep Dhankhar, following Dhankhar's resignation from the post of Vice President of India. Dhankhar, who served as the Vice President since August 2022, resigned on Monday, July 21, 2025, citing the need to prioritize his health in accordance with medical advice.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi acknowledged Dhankhar's extensive public service across various roles, including his tenure as the Vice President of India. "Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health," the Prime Minister wrote.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, born on May 18, 1951, had a long and varied political career before becoming the Vice President. He was a member of Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991, representing the Jhunjhunu constituency in Rajasthan. During this period, he served as a Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in 1990-1991. He was also a Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 1998. Before assuming the office of Vice President, Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.
Dhankhar's tenure as Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha was marked by significant interactions with the Opposition. His assertive stance on parliamentary sovereignty and judicial decisions led to debates and unprecedented suspensions of MPs.
Dhankhar's resignation, which came on the first day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, has initiated the search for his successor. In the interim, Harivansh Narayan Singh, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, will temporarily assume the role of Chairman. The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for the election of the new Vice President soon. The electoral college for the Vice Presidential election comprises members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
Dhankhar's departure has triggered a flurry of activity, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) expected to soon select a candidate for the Vice President position. According to sources within the BJP, the party is likely to favor a candidate who is both experienced and non-controversial.
Jagdeep Dhankhar's political journey, from a grassroots politician to the second-highest constitutional office in India, has been eventful. As the nation looks ahead to the election of a new Vice President, PM Modi's message of good health serves as a concluding note to Dhankhar's term.
