The Tata Group has announced that it will provide ₹1 crore in compensation to the families of each of the deceased victims of the recent Air India Flight 171 crash near Ahmedabad. The announcement comes after the tragic incident on Thursday, June 12, 2025, which involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick. The flight crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
In addition to the compensation for the families of the deceased, the Tata Group has also committed to covering the medical expenses for those injured in the crash. The group will ensure that all injured passengers receive the necessary care and support during their recovery.
The Tata Group will also provide support in rebuilding the hostel at B J Medical College, which was severely damaged when the aircraft crashed. The hostel was struck during the crash, resulting in the death of three students and injuries to many others. The rebuilding effort aims to restore the facility and provide a safe and comfortable living environment for the students.
N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed his condolences and deep sorrow regarding the tragic event. "We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured," he stated.
The Air India Express completed compensation settlements for passengers and crew involved in the Air India Express Flight IX 1344 crash in 2020. This included compensating 165 injured passengers, four crew members, and the families of 19 deceased passengers and two pilots. The airline facilitated the process through a Kozhikode-based helpdesk and accepted documents via WhatsApp to expedite claims.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is currently leading the investigation into the cause of the crash. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of air travel and has prompted renewed scrutiny of Boeing's Dreamliner program. UK officials are also being deployed to India to support the investigation. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has formally offered its assistance to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau in India.
