Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Canada for the G7 Summit presents a significant opportunity to reset the strained relationship between the two nations, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting between PM Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on the sidelines of the summit, scheduled to take place in Kananaskis, Alberta from June 15 to 17, marks the first bilateral engagement between the two leaders since relations soured in September 2023.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on Thursday, June 12, 2025, that the meeting will provide an "important opportunity" to discuss matters of bilateral interest and explore pathways to rebuild the relationship based on "mutual respect, shared interests, and sensitivity to each other's concerns." Jaiswal highlighted that India and Canada are vibrant democracies bound by shared democratic values and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law. He also acknowledged the strong people-to-people ties between the two countries.
The relationship between India and Canada experienced a downturn following allegations made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who accused Indian state actors of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan activist, in Surrey on June 18, 2023. India has strongly refuted these claims.
In response to questions regarding India's concerns about the space given to Sikh separatists and transnational organized crime gangs in Canada, Jaiswal noted that mutual security concerns are being addressed through existing mechanisms between the law enforcement agencies of both countries. He expressed confidence that this engagement would continue. India has consistently raised the issue of Khalistan separatists and organized criminal elements operating from Canadian territory and has accused Canada of tolerating extremism and failing to take action against attacks on Indian diplomats.
Despite the recent strains, there are indications that both countries are willing to work towards improving their relationship. Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged India's global standing and emphasized that India's stature made its participation in the G7 dialogue imperative. Following his recent election victory, Carney identified rebuilding ties with India as a priority, signaling a potential reset in relations.
PM Modi also congratulated Carney on his recent election victory. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests," PM Modi posted on X.
Both India and Canada stand to gain from strengthened bilateral relations. The two countries have expansive economic engagements, large people-to-people connections, a significant student community, and technology collaborations. The upcoming meeting provides an opportunity to address mutual concerns, strengthen cooperation in various sectors, and chart a new course for the relationship based on mutual understanding and respect.
