Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Sky News' Neville Lazarus managed to speak with Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the British national who miraculously survived the disaster. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon, leaving Mr. Ramesh as the only passenger reported to have survived.
Mr. Lazarus reported that Mr. Ramesh, while physically fit, was understandably "very shaken up" by the ordeal. He was conscious and able to nod in response to questions, but the emotional trauma was evident. Doctors in Ahmedabad confirmed his physical well-being to Sky News, while also acknowledging the psychological impact of the crash.
Speaking to the Hindustan Times, Mr. Ramesh recalled hearing a "loud noise" approximately 30 seconds after takeoff, immediately before the plane went down. He described the events as happening "so quickly," and reported sustaining "impact injuries" to his chest, eyes, and feet. His harrowing account detailed the chaotic scene after the crash. "When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me." He was then quickly taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Adding to the account, Mr. Ramesh's brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, spoke with Sky News, relaying a video call his father received from Vishwash moments after the crash. In the call, Vishwash exclaimed, "Oh the plane's crashed. I don't know where my brother is. I don't see any other passengers. I don't know how I'm alive - how I exited the plane." Nayan described his brother's survival as a "miracle," while also expressing worry for his other sibling, who was also believed to be on board the flight.
According to Vidhi Chaudhary, a senior police officer in Ahmedabad, Mr. Ramesh was seated in 11A, next to an emergency exit, which allowed him to escape by jumping out of the emergency door. This detail highlights the fortunate circumstances that contributed to his survival.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with family members both relieved and anxious as they await further information. Nayan Kumar Ramesh mentioned that his father was on the phone with Vishwash while the plane was still on the runway, just moments before takeoff. The last thing Vishwash said to his father was "oh we're going to take off soon." Two minutes later, the family received the video call confirming the crash and his survival.
