A wave of sorrow has engulfed Nhava village in Uran taluka, Navi Mumbai, following the tragic passing of Maithili Patil, a young and accomplished member of the Air India cabin crew. The 23-year-old was among the victims of the recent Air India flight AI171 accident in Ahmedabad. The entire community is mourning the loss of a woman who, despite humble beginnings, soared to great heights in the aviation industry.
Maithili's journey was a source of immense pride for Nhava, as she was the first person from the village to become a cabin crew member with a commercial airline. Growing up in Nhava, she harbored a deep-seated dream of flying. Her unwavering determination and diligent efforts propelled her from the classrooms of Lady Khatun Marium School to the skies, where she proudly served on international flights.
News of her sudden and untimely demise has plunged the village into profound grief. Daisamma Paul, the Principal of Lady Khatun Marium School, fondly remembered Maithili as a "humble and disciplined student." She completed her 12th grade in 2020-21 and subsequently pursued a cabin crew course, eventually securing employment with Air India. Even after graduating, Maithili maintained close ties with her alma mater. Just two months ago, she graced a career guidance session, inspiring students to explore opportunities in the aviation sector.
The villagers, who had followed her journey with unwavering pride, are devastated by her loss. Moreshwar Patil, Maithili's father, an ONGC employee, wholeheartedly supported her dreams, even amidst financial constraints. He, along with the rest of the family, has rushed to Ahmedabad. Harischandra Mhatre, the former Sarpanch of Nhava, fondly remembered Maithili as a down-to-earth and career-focused individual. He emphasized that "She never wasted time in trivial matters and always spoke politely to everyone." A distant relative echoed this sentiment, highlighting the tough circumstances under which her father raised her, stating that despite the lack of a steady income, Maithili never abandoned her aspirations of flying.
Maithili's story had become a beacon of hope and inspiration for many young people in Nhava. Her achievements brought immense joy to the region, which celebrated her success as one of their own. Just before the tragic flight, Maithili spoke to her father from Ahmedabad, promising to call him after landing in London, a call that never came.
Maithili's journey to becoming a cabin crew member was marked by hard work and dedication. After completing her education till Class 12 at TS Rahaman Institute, she pursued an advanced course to become an air hostess and joined Air India nearly two years ago.
