South Africa have ended their agonizing 27-year wait for an ICC trophy, defeating Australia by five wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final at Lord's on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Aiden Markram's magnificent 136 was the cornerstone of their successful chase of 282, guiding the Proteas to a historic victory.

The atmosphere at Lord's was electric as South Africa resumed their innings on Day 4, needing just 69 runs to win. However, Australia's formidable bowling attack, led by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, wasn't going to surrender without a fight. Cummins struck early, removing the injured South Africa captain Temba Bavuma for 66, who had battled valiantly with a hamstring strain. Starc then added to the tension by dismissing Tristan Stubbs, leaving South Africa still needing 41 runs.

But Aiden Markram remained unperturbed. Having scored a duck in the first innings, the opener displayed remarkable composure and skill, anchoring the chase with his superb century. He had come into the test match directly after playing in the IPL. Markram found support in skipper Temba Bavuma as the duo frustrated the Australian attack. His 136 was the highest score of the match and earned him the Player of the Match award. Notably, Markram also grabbed the crucial wicket of Steve Smith in the first innings and the final wicket in the second innings.

Just as victory seemed assured, Markram fell with only six runs remaining, caught off Josh Hazlewood. However, the nerves were quickly settled as Kyle Verreynne struck the winning runs, sparking scenes of jubilation among the South African team and fans.

The victory was particularly sweet for South Africa, who have endured a series of heartbreaks in ICC tournaments over the years, including a recent loss in the T20 World Cup final. This WTC triumph marks a significant moment in South African cricket history, showcasing the team's resilience and determination.

Several individual performances stood out in the match. Kagiso Rabada's nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings, were crucial in restricting Australia's totals. Mitchell Starc's all-round performance, with a valuable half-century and key wickets, kept Australia in the contest. Pat Cummins also reached his 300th Test wicket in the match.

But it was Markram's masterful innings that ultimately defined the final. His ability to soak up pressure, combined with his elegant strokeplay, proved to be the difference between the two sides. His century was only the third in WTC final history, and the first by a South African.

This victory is not just about winning a trophy; it represents the culmination of years of hard work and dedication by the South African team. It's a testament to their growth as a cricketing nation and a moment that will be cherished by fans for generations to come. The class of 2025 has etched their names in South African cricket folklore, breaking the ICC trophy jinx in style.
