Dylan Roobroeck, drafted by the New York Rangers as the 178th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, is rapidly exceeding expectations and solidifying his status as a potential steal for the organization. The towering 6-foot-7 center has made significant strides in his development, showcasing a blend of size, skill, and hockey IQ that has many believing he could become a valuable asset for the Rangers in the coming years.

Roobroeck's journey to becoming a promising prospect began in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he played for both the Niagara IceDogs and the Oshawa Generals. It was with the Generals that he truly began to shine. During the 2023-24 season, Roobroeck finished second on the team in scoring with 72 points (26 goals and 46 assists) in 68 games, helping his team reach the OHL Championship round. He continued his impressive performance into the playoffs, leading the team with 11 goals and 15 assists in 21 games. These numbers were enough for the New York Rangers to sign Roobroeck to a three-year, entry-level contract in May 2024.

Transitioning to professional hockey, Roobroeck joined the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers' AHL affiliate, for the 2024-25 season. After a slow start, he found his rhythm and became a key contributor to the team's offense. He closed out his first professional season with an exclamation point, scoring his 20th goal in the Wolf Pack's season finale against Bridgeport. This goal not only secured a 4-1 victory for Hartford but also made him the team's leading goal scorer and placed him fourth in overall scoring with 34 points. He was also one of 11 AHL rookies to reach the 20-goal mark this season. Nine of those goals came in his final 12 games, including three two-goal performances.

Several factors contribute to Roobroeck's burgeoning success. His exceptional size gives him a significant advantage around the net, allowing him to establish a strong net-front presence and win battles in tight areas. Despite his height, Roobroeck possesses soft hands and impressive playmaking skills. Scouts have noted his ability to read the ice quickly and make smart decisions with the puck, often slipping passes to teammates through tight spaces. While skating was initially identified as an area for improvement, Roobroeck has worked diligently to refine his stride and enhance his overall mobility.

Roobroeck's strong rookie season has not gone unnoticed. He has drawn comparisons to Matt Rempe and Adam Edstrom, two other towering players who have recently joined the Rangers' roster. However, Roobroeck is considered to have a higher offensive upside than both. While Rempe's contributions have primarily come from his physicality, Roobroeck has demonstrated a consistent ability to contribute offensively.

Looking ahead, Roobroeck is expected to continue his development with the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Rangers will likely monitor his progress closely, assessing his readiness to make the jump to the NHL. If he continues to refine his skills and build upon his impressive rookie season, Roobroeck could very well become a valuable middle-six forward for the Rangers, providing a unique combination of size, skill, and hockey IQ. His ability to contribute on the power play and provide a physical presence would make him a valuable asset to the team. Given where he was drafted, Roobroeck is already considered a success, but if he continues to improve, he has the chance to become an impact player for the New York Rangers.
