Coastal Karnataka is experiencing significant disruption to normal life due to heavy rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the region, including Dakshina Kannada district. The red alert, initially issued on Saturday, June 14, 2025, remains in effect until the morning of Monday, June 16, 2025, warning of continued heavy rainfall across the district. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) and extremely heavy rain (above 204.5 mm) with thunder showers and sustained wind speeds of 40-50 kmph in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi districts.
Mangaluru city is particularly affected, with several low-lying areas reporting waterlogging. Key roads, including those beneath the Pumpwell flyover, Car Street, Lower Bendur and Kottara, and underpasses like the Padil railway underpass, have been submerged, causing severe traffic disruptions. A bus breakdown on a flooded stretch near the Pumpwell flyover required passengers and locals to push it to the roadside, highlighting the severity of the situation. These routes have experienced heavy inundation and flooding impacting vehicular movement.
In addition to traffic issues, rainwater has reportedly entered homes in several low-lying residential areas, causing distress to families. The intense downpour on Friday, June 13, 2025, was particularly impactful, even after previous red alerts had yielded relatively little rain. Despite the earlier minimal rainfall, the current conditions and cloudy skies indicate the likelihood of further heavy rain.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have taken measures to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains. Smaller vehicles are being diverted to designated service roads, as per Section 31 of the National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002, a measure expected to remain in place throughout the monsoon season until September 2025. The rains have also caused damage to infrastructure, with five houses in the Udupi district damaged in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning.
While the red alert is in effect until June 16th, the IMD has indicated that heavy to very heavy rain and thundershowers are likely to continue in the region on June 16th and 17th. Heavy rain is also expected on June 18th. These forecasts suggest that coastal Karnataka should prepare for extended periods of unsettled weather.
