Jets Secure Promising Young Talent: Alfons Freij Inks Entry-Level Deal with Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg Jets have officially signed their promising defensive prospect, Alfons Freij, to a three-year entry-level contract. The announcement was made by the team on Saturday, June 14, 2025, solidifying their commitment to developing young talent within their system. The contract carries an average annual value of $975,000.

Freij, a 19-year-old Swedish defenseman, was the Jets' first selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, chosen 37th overall. His selection was highly anticipated, with many scouts praising his blend of size, skating ability, and offensive potential.

Last season, Freij played 29 games for IF Björklöven in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second-highest league in Sweden. As a rookie blueliner transitioning to professional hockey, he recorded two goals and eight points. While these numbers might appear modest, they demonstrate a solid foundation for a young defenseman adjusting to the increased speed and physicality of the pro game.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 196 pounds, Freij possesses a sturdy frame that allows him to compete physically. However, his skating is considered one of his greatest assets. His agility and balance enable him to maintain composure under pressure, facilitating smooth breakouts and confident transitions.

Offensively, Freij is known for his accurate passing and ability to drive the play from the defensive end. Scouting reports highlight his above-average shot and pro-ready one-timer, suggesting significant offensive potential as he develops.

While his offensive game is progressing rapidly, Freij's defensive skills are still a work in progress. He needs to refine his overall hockey sense and improve his play on both sides of the ice, as his offensive capabilities currently outweigh his defensive prowess, according to some scouting reports.

Looking ahead, Freij is slated to play in the SHL with Timrå IK next season, which is viewed as a crucial step in his development. The SHL's faster pace and higher level of competition will test his decision-making and help him hone all aspects of his game.

Despite not making Sweden's World Junior roster last year, Freij is a strong candidate to represent his country in the upcoming tournament, with several key players aging out.

While it's likely that Freij is still a few years away from contending for a regular roster spot with the Winnipeg Jets, the plan for his development is clear. He is expected to spend one or two seasons in the SHL, followed by a potential transition to the AHL with the Manitoba Moose, the Jets' primary minor league affiliate. This measured approach will allow him to gradually adjust to the North American game and further refine his skills before making the jump to the NHL. The Jets are investing in Freij's potential, hoping he will become a key part of their defensive core in the future.
