A tragic helicopter crash near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand has claimed the lives of seven individuals, according to the latest reports. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, June 15, 2025, as the chopper was en route to the revered Kedarnath shrine.
Initial reports indicated conflicting numbers regarding the passengers on board, with some sources stating five and others claiming six. However, it has now been confirmed that there were seven people on board the ill-fated helicopter. The aircraft, operated by Aryan Aviation, was ferrying pilgrims from Guptkashi to Kedarnath Dham when it crashed between Gaurikund and Sonprayag, approximately 10 minutes into its journey.
The Uttarakhand Police confirmed the crash, with ADG Law and Order Dr V Murugeshan initially reporting the helicopter missing between Trijuginarayan and Gaurikund. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site to search for survivors. Unfortunately, no survivors were found, and all seven occupants were declared dead.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. However, initial reports suggest that adverse weather conditions in the Kedarnath valley may have been a contributing factor. The region has been experiencing inclement weather, which could have led to the accident.
This is not the first helicopter accident in the region. In May 2025, a helicopter heading to Gangotri Dham crashed near Uttarkashi, resulting in six fatalities and one injury. These incidents raise serious concerns about the safety of helicopter operations in the Char Dham Yatra circuit, particularly during periods of unfavorable weather.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. Authorities are taking steps to ensure the safety of pilgrims and have urged helicopter operators to adhere to strict safety guidelines. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The names of the deceased have not yet been officially released, as authorities are in the process of notifying their families. The bodies are being recovered from the crash site and will be handed over to their relatives after identification. The state government has announced compensation for the families of the victims.
