The Indian diaspora is viewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Canada for the G7 Summit as a significant opportunity to rebuild trust and mend strained relations between the two nations. This sentiment of cautious optimism prevails among the diaspora, who hope to see renewed cooperation in various sectors.

Ties between India and Canada experienced a downturn following allegations made by the previous Canadian government regarding the involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. These allegations led to a diplomatic fallout, including a freeze in trade talks and the expulsion of diplomats, creating a chilling effect on people-to-people exchanges, especially in student visas and immigration.

However, with the change in Canadian leadership and Prime Minister Mark Carney taking office, there is a renewed sense of hope for a positive shift in bilateral relations. Carney has identified rebuilding ties with India as a priority, signaling a reset in the relationship. This invitation to PM Modi for the G7 Summit is seen as a step towards repairing the damage and fostering a more constructive dialogue.

The Indian diaspora has strong roots in Canada, with nearly two million people of Indian origin residing in the country, constituting about 5% of Canada's total population. This vibrant diaspora has made significant contributions to various sectors, including trade, technology, and academia, forming a solid foundation for renewed engagement between the two countries.

India and Canada share strong trade and people-to-people ties, with bilateral commerce amounting to around $9 billion in 2023. Canadian pension funds have also cumulatively invested around $55 billion in India, highlighting the economic significance of the relationship. Strengthening cooperation in trade, critical minerals, technology, and academic exchange would benefit both countries.

The upcoming meeting between PM Modi and Prime Minister Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit is expected to be a crucial step towards resetting the India-Canada relationship. Both leaders have expressed their commitment to strengthening their partnership and unlocking greater opportunities for their people. The focus will likely be on addressing mutual interests and respecting each other's concerns.

However, challenges remain, including the ongoing investigation into the assassination of Nijjar and concerns about the Khalistan movement. New Delhi has demanded stricter action against the Khalistan movement, which is banned in India, while Canada has maintained its stance on freedom of speech and expression.

Despite these challenges, the Indian diaspora remains optimistic that PM Modi's visit to Canada will pave the way for a more stable and productive relationship between the two countries. The shared democratic values, commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties provide a strong foundation for renewed engagement and cooperation.
