The Char Dham Yatra, a revered pilgrimage in Uttarakhand, has been marred by a series of unfortunate incidents involving helicopter operations in the past six weeks. These mishaps, ranging from technical malfunctions to fatal crashes, have raised serious concerns about the safety and oversight of aviation services in the region.
The most recent and devastating incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, 2025, when a helicopter carrying pilgrims from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed near Gaurikund, resulting in the death of all seven people on board, including the pilot and a child. The helicopter, a BELL 407 operated by Aryan Aviation, lost contact shortly after takeoff, and its wreckage was found approximately 5 km uphill from Gaurikund. Rescue teams from the SDRF and NDRF were immediately dispatched to the site. The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, with preliminary reports suggesting that poor visibility due to inclement weather may have been a contributing factor.
Barely a week before this tragic event, on June 7, a helicopter carrying five passengers to Kedarnath was forced to make an emergency landing on a highway in Rudraprayag district due to a technical issue during takeoff. In this instance, a part of the chopper collided with a stationary car below. Fortunately, all six people on board the private chopper escaped unharmed.
Earlier, on May 8, a helicopter en route to Gangotri crashed into a gorge, claiming the lives of six individuals, including five passengers and the pilot. The increasing frequency of these incidents has prompted the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to take decisive action.
In response to these events, the DGCA has ordered special audits and enhanced surveillance of helicopter operations in Uttarakhand. The aviation regulator is also considering curtailing operations and has already suspended two operators for violations of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Investigations are currently underway to identify the root causes of these accidents, including potential mechanical failures and the challenges posed by the region's unpredictable weather patterns. The state government has also formed a high-level committee to investigate the crashes and recommend actions against negligent parties.
These recent mishaps highlight the urgent need for stricter safety regulations, improved infrastructure, and enhanced monitoring of helicopter operations along the Char Dham route. The safety of pilgrims and aviation personnel must be prioritized to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safe continuation of this sacred pilgrimage.
