Mohammad Asaduddin, son of former Indian cricket captain and politician Mohammad Azharuddin, has officially entered the political arena, following in his father's footsteps. He has been appointed as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress, marking a significant development in his career and adding another chapter to his family's legacy.
The announcement of Asaduddin's appointment was met with pride and emotion from his father, Mohammad Azharuddin, who took to social media to express his feelings. "A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress," Azharuddin wrote. He further added, "I've seen his commitment to people, his passion for service, and his sincerity up close. May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter. Wishing him all the very best as he takes on this responsibility."
Prior to his entry into politics, Asaduddin, 35, pursued a career in cricket, even representing Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy in 2018-19. However, his sporting career faced disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite his love for cricket, Asaduddin felt a strong inclination towards public service and social work, which ultimately led him to join the Congress party.
Asaduddin's political journey began with his active involvement in his father's 2023 Telangana Assembly election campaign in Jubilee Hills. He managed rallies and meetings, gaining valuable experience and exposure to the political landscape. Before being appointed as General Secretary, he served as the Youth Congress's sports cell secretary in Telangana.
Inspired by Rahul Gandhi's dedication to social justice and influenced by his father's long-standing political career, Asaduddin aims to serve the community and make a positive impact on people's lives. He sees his new role as a "big responsibility" and is committed to working for the party in line with its ideology.
Asaduddin is a graduate in law and is married to Anam Mirza, the sister of tennis star Sania Mirza, further cementing his connection to prominent families in both sports and society.
There is speculation that Asaduddin may contest in the upcoming bypolls in Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills constituency, which became vacant after the unfortunate demise of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath. While Asaduddin acknowledges the possibility, he remains focused on his current role and responsibilities within the party.
His appointment as General Secretary is part of a larger restructuring within the Telangana Congress, with the announcement of 27 vice-presidents and 69 general secretaries. This revamp aims to strengthen the party's organizational structure and prepare it for future electoral challenges.
With his background in sports, education in law, and family's deep roots in politics, Mohammad Asaduddin brings a diverse set of experiences and perspectives to his new role. As he embarks on this new chapter, he carries the hopes and expectations of many, ready to contribute to the progress and development of Telangana.
