Bollywood actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani and his wife, actress Rakul Preet Singh, are passionate advocates for clean eating and sustainable living, which has led them to cultivate their own kitchen garden. They grow a variety of herbs and leafy greens, along with vegetables like tomatoes, chillies, bitter gourd (karela), eggplant (brinjal), pumpkin, mint (pudina), spinach (palak) and more on their terrace.
The couple's journey into home gardening stems from a growing awareness of the harmful chemicals and pesticides present in commercially grown produce. Jackky, in particular, was taken aback by the extent to which pesticides have infiltrated the food chain. This realization motivated them to take control of their food source and ensure they were consuming healthy, chemical-free ingredients.
Rakul Preet Singh and Jackky Bhagnani's interest in growing their food started after coming across an article that claimed India was becoming the world's "cancer capital," due to pesticides and fertilizers used in farming. They realized the importance of the ingredients in their diet and decided to grow their own.
According to Jackky, he has been very careful about health and fitness for many years and he and Rakul bonded over their shared passion for the subject. They would discuss the perils of eating vegetables laced with pesticides and toxic fertilizers, because of which soil contamination is increasing. When they got married, they decided to grow as many greens as possible.
The couple noticed a significant difference in the taste and quality of their homegrown produce. The experience has been so rewarding that they are now considering expanding their farming efforts to a larger scale, where they can grow more vegetables and benefit others as well.
Jackky also spoke about the joy he gets from cultivating and harvesting his own produce, even in small quantities, and encourages others to start small with container gardening on balconies or growing herbs in kitchen windows. He believes growing a sapling from a seed is a very fulfilling experience, and it is good for the planet too.
The couple also uses their platform to promote environmental awareness. For their wedding, Rakul and Jackky planted a tree for every guest who attended. They have also participated in beach cleanups, tree plantations, and sewage cleanup drives.
