The honeymoon murder case of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman, has taken a shocking turn with new details emerging about the final hours before his death. Raja and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is now the prime suspect in his murder, were captured on video trekking in Meghalaya just hours before Raja was killed on May 23.
A tourist, Dev Singh, "accidentally" recorded the couple climbing a steep peak in Meghalaya around 9:45 am on May 23. Singh posted the video on Instagram, unaware of the tragic events that would unfold later that day. The video shows Sonam leading the way, with Raja following her. According to reports, Raja was murdered and his body was dumped in a gorge later that afternoon.
Sonam's three accomplices, who were allegedly hired by her and her lover, Raj Kushwaha, were staying at a nearby homestay and checked out around the same time as the couple. Around 10 am, Sonam and Raja met the three hitmen – Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Chauhan – after completing around 2,000 steps along the trek route. A local guide noticed the group of five together. Sources say that as the hitmen and Raja began talking, Sonam slowed down and started walking behind them.
Around 12:30 pm, Sonam called Raja's mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, and told her that she was exhausted from the trek. Raja also spoke to his mother in what would be their last conversation. An hour later, the group drove from Mawlakhiat to the parking lot at Wei Sawdong Waterfalls. Upon reaching the waterfalls, the hitmen allegedly killed Raja and threw his body into a gorge.
Initially, the couple was reported missing, but on June 2, Raja's body was discovered, leading to a murder investigation. On June 7, Sonam was found in an unconscious state at a 'dhaba' in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. Sonam has reportedly confessed to plotting her husband's murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. She admitted to paying Raj Kushwaha ₹50,000 to track their movements and arrange accomplices.
Police investigations revealed that the murder was planned 11 days before Sonam's wedding to Raja. Several plans were considered, including faking Sonam's disappearance or murdering another woman and passing off the body as Sonam's. When these plans failed, Sonam proceeded with the wedding. Police also revealed that there were three failed murder attempts before the final act in Wahkdait.
Currently, five people, including Sonam, Raj Kushwaha, and three contract killers, have been arrested. Raja's brother is seeking a narco analysis test on Sonam and Raj Kushwaha.
