The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gearing up to appoint a new chief for its Uttar Pradesh unit ahead of the crucial 2027 Assembly elections. This decision comes as the party aims to recalibrate its organizational machinery and strengthen its position in the state, especially after the 2024 Lok Sabha election results exposed vulnerabilities in the party's outreach to certain communities.
Several factors are guiding the selection process, with political experience and social arithmetic being key considerations. Caste equations are at the heart of the decision, as the party seeks to rebuild its support base among key caste groups, particularly the non-Yadav Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The BJP aims to counter the opposition's growing appeal through caste-based alliances. A strong preference is being given to candidates from eastern Uttar Pradesh (Purvanchal), a region where the BJP faced significant setbacks in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The urgency to contain the damage in eastern UP before 2027 is growing within the BJP. The party leadership is considering an OBC face from this region to re-establish links with its traditional non-Yadav OBC base. The social identity of the new chief will be central to the party's performance in 2027.
Several names are being considered for the position, including Minister Dharmpal Singh, Union Minister B.L. Verma, and Rajya Sabha MP Baburam Nishad, all of whom are OBC leaders with deep regional roots. The BJP is also said to be considering Dalit leaders such as former MPs Ram Shankar Katheria, Vinod Sonkar, and Neelam Sonkar, as well as former MLC Vidya Sagar Sonkar. Other names circulating include Swatantra Dev Singh, Amar Pal Maurya, Dinesh Sharma, and Laxmi Kant Bajpayee.
The BJP has completed appointments in 70 of its 98 district and city units, a crucial prerequisite before naming a state chief. According to the party's constitution, a minimum of 50% of the total district presidents are required to complete the process of electing the state president.
The current UP BJP chief, Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a Jat leader from western Uttar Pradesh, was appointed in 2022. While there's a possibility he may continue due to his close ties with the central leadership, the party is also considering other candidates to align with the state's evolving social and electoral realities.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has predicted a sweeping victory for the BJP in the 2027 assembly elections, forecasting that the party will secure more than 80 per cent of the seats. However, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticized the BJP's governance and claimed that the "disappointment" of lakhs of job aspirants will result in a massive electoral setback for the ruling BJP in the 2027 Assembly elections.
The appointment of the new UP BJP chief is a strategic exercise to prepare for the fierce caste-driven battle that lies ahead in 2027. The new leader will need political agility and a nuanced understanding of the state's complex social landscape to steer the party to victory.
