The makers of "Kantara: Chapter 1," the prequel to the acclaimed 2022 film "Kantara," have refuted reports of a boat accident on set. Recent reports alleged that a boat carrying Rishab Shetty and approximately 30 crew members capsized during filming at the Mani Dam reservoir in Karnataka. However, the film's executive producer, Adarsh JA, has clarified that these reports are false and misleading.
According to Adarsh JA, no one was on the boat when it tipped over. The boat was part of the background visuals and not actively used for filming. He explained that strong winds and rain caused the vessel to capsize on June 14, 2025. Since no one was near the boat at the time, there were no casualties or harm to the crew. He assured everyone that "No one was on the boat when it tipped over, and no accidents took place."
The executive producer also addressed speculation that the shoot had been halted due to the reported incident. He confirmed that production is progressing smoothly and that filming continues as planned. The actual shooting location was far from where the boat tipped over.
Adarsh JA emphasized that the team has obtained all necessary permissions and implemented extensive safety protocols to ensure the crew's well-being. These measures include standby speed boats, fishermen, swimmers, scuba divers, and life jackets. He further stated that none of the film equipment or cameras were affected. "Had the gear sunk, we wouldn't be able to continue shooting," he noted. Local authorities have inspected the area and confirmed that no mishap occurred.
This clarification follows earlier reports of other unfortunate incidents during the film's production, including the death of junior artists. In May 2025, Hombale Films clarified that the death of junior artist MF Kapil, who drowned in a river, was unrelated to the film's shoot and occurred during his personal time. Similarly, the team mourned the loss of actor Rakesh Poojari, who passed away due to a heart attack. The production team has faced other logistical setbacks, including damage to a massive set caused by a storm.
Despite these challenges, Rishab Shetty and Hombale Films remain committed to bringing "Kantara: Chapter 1" to audiences. The film is slated for a theatrical release on October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
"Kantara: Chapter 1" is set during the reign of the Kadamba dynasty of Banavasi and promises to delve deeper into the themes introduced in the original film, with a focus on cultural rituals. The film is produced on a grand scale, with extensive war sequences and a larger budget than its predecessor. Rishab Shetty has undergone rigorous training in Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art, to authentically portray his character. The film features a cast including Rishab Shetty and Jayaram in lead roles.
