The Tamil Nadu government has suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, a day after his arrest in connection with the alleged abduction of a minor boy in the Tiruvallur district. The suspension order was issued by the Home Department, following recommendations from Director General of Police Shankar Jiwal.
Jayaram's arrest came after the Madras High Court ordered police to take him into custody. He is accused of abetting a gang by providing his official car to abduct a 17-year-old boy, allegedly to separate a couple who had married against the wishes of the girl's parents. The case dates back to May 10, 2025, involving the kidnapping of the boy from Kalambakkam near Thiruvalangadu in Tiruvallur district. The boy's elder brother had married a woman from Theni district, and her family disapproved of the union.
According to reports, the girl's family sought assistance from Puratchi Bharatham Katchi leader and Kilvaithinakuppam MLA, 'Poovai' M. Jagan Moorthy, after failing to locate the couple. Investigations suggest that members of the woman's family, allegedly aided by hired individuals, forcibly entered the boy's home and abducted him while his parents were away. The boy was later found abandoned near a hotel, traumatized and injured.
The High Court took a stern view of the matter after investigations revealed that an official car linked to ADGP Jayaram was allegedly used in the abduction. Justice P. Velmurugan, who presided over the case, emphasized that privileges granted to public representatives do not extend to public servants involved in criminal activities. He noted that two of the arrested accused had confessed to the ADGP's involvement in the abduction. Justice Velmurugan also directed MLA Jagan Moorthy to appear before the investigating officer and cooperate with the probe.
Following his arrest on Monday, Jayaram was interrogated for approximately 16 hours at the Tiruttani police station. Subsequently, he was taken to the Thiruvalangadu police station for further questioning, along with MLA Jagan Moorthy.
Jayaram has moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Madras High Court's order. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear his petition on June 18.
Sources indicate that Jayaram has hinted at professional jealousy as a possible motive behind the accusations. Meanwhile, the police have stated that Jayaram has been let off after the enquiry but he could be summoned again if needed for further questioning.
