The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly on the verge of signing Trent Frederic to a contract extension, a move that has surprised many within the NHL. More than one insider has confirmed that the Oilers are making a bet on Frederic.

Frederic, a depth forward known for his size and grit, was acquired by the Oilers at the trade deadline from the Boston Bruins. However, an injury limited his playing time and effectiveness in the playoffs. Despite this, the Oilers seem to believe in Frederic's potential and see him as a valuable asset for the future.

Sportsnet NHL insider Elliotte Friedman initially mentioned on his podcast that the Oilers were working on an extension to retain Frederic. He noted that Frederic has become more comfortable in Edmonton and that the team appreciates what he brings.

While the exact terms of the contract are not yet known, reports suggest it will be a multi-year deal potentially worth around $3 million per season. This figure has raised eyebrows among fans, with some expressing concern about the term and dollar amount, especially considering Frederic's limited impact since joining the Oilers.

Ryan Rishaug of "Got Yer' Back" podcast noted that the Oilers view Frederic as someone who aligns with their goals for the next several seasons. Oilers general manager Stan Bowman seems to believe that Frederic will grow into the contract and that it will look good as the salary cap rises in the next two or three years.

There is speculation about where Frederic will fit into the Oilers' lineup. Rishaug believes the team ultimately sees him as a center, while Jason Strudwick sees the value in Frederic as a big player around whom a line can be built. Strudwick suggests Frederic could become a player like Adam Lowry of the Winnipeg Jets, who plays a heavy game and can score.

Frederic, currently 27 years old, is in awe of his new teammate Connor McDavid and has praised his work ethic and dedication to the game. He is in the final season of a two-year, $4.6 million contract extension he signed with the Bruins in 2023.

Some analysts believe that if Frederic can develop into a Lowry-type player, a $3 million contract over several years might be a worthwhile investment, particularly with the expected rise in the salary cap. Others caution that the Oilers need to be mindful of their cap situation, especially with key players like Evan Bouchard also requiring new contracts.

Frederic had a strong 2023-24 season with the Bruins, scoring 18 goals and 22 assists in 82 games. However, his production declined this season before the trade, with only eight goals and seven assists in 57 games. The Oilers are betting that Frederic can regain his previous form and become a key contributor in their bottom six.
