The Indian cricket team is gearing up for a significant Test series against England, and key announcements regarding the batting lineup have been made. With the series set to commence on June 20, 2025, all eyes are on the new leadership and the fresh faces stepping into crucial roles. Rishabh Pant, the newly appointed vice-captain, has confirmed Shubman Gill's batting position, settling some of the pre-series speculation.

Shubman Gill, who has been named captain following Rohit Sharma's retirement, will bat at number 4. This is a significant decision, as Gill will be stepping into the shoes of Virat Kohli, who previously occupied that pivotal position. Pant, during a pre-match press conference in Leeds on June 18, 2025, stated that the number 4 and 5 positions are 확정된, with Gill at 4 and himself at number 5. Gill's move to number 4 marks a significant reshuffling of the top order, especially considering he has been batting at number 3 for the past few years, after initially starting his Test career as an opener.

The number 3 position, however, remains a topic of discussion. Potential candidates for this slot include Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, and Sai Sudharsan. Easwaran has been part of the Test squad before, even traveling to Australia, but has yet to get a chance to play. Nair recently demonstrated his form with an impressive double century against England Lions earlier in June. Sudharsan, while talented, has comparatively less experience at this level. The team management is expected to make a final decision on who will bat at number 3 closer to the match day, taking pitch conditions into account.

Pant emphasized the importance of camaraderie within the team, particularly his relationship with Gill. He expressed his belief that a strong friendship off the field translates to better performance on the field. This bond will be crucial, especially with Gill leading the team for the first time in a Test series and Pant serving as his deputy.

The series marks the beginning of a new era for the Indian Test team, with both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having retired. This presents an opportunity for new faces to step up and establish themselves. India is aiming for their first Test series win in England since 2007.

England has already announced their pace-heavy playing XI for the series opener in Leeds. The Indian squad includes a mix of experienced players and fresh talent. Harshit Rana has been added to India's Test squad for the England tour.

Kapil Dev has voiced his confidence in Shubman Gill's leadership, believing that Gill will lead India to victory despite the absence of seasoned players like Rohit, Kohli, and Ashwin.

Former England batter Nick Knight has suggested that England will specifically target Gill, putting extra pressure on the new captain. Gill's home batting average stands strong at 42.03, his overseas average is a lower 27.53.

The five-match Test series is scheduled as follows:

  • 1st Test: June 20-24 at Headingley, Leeds
  • 2nd Test: July 2-6 at Edgbaston, Birmingham
  • 3rd Test: July 10-14 at Lord's Cricket Ground, London
  • 4th Test: July 23-27 at Old Trafford, Manchester
  • 5th Test: July 31-August 4 at Kennington Oval, London
