A tragic incident in Noida has claimed the life of a 59-year-old man after the Uber cab he was traveling in collided with a stationary tempo. The family alleges that the cab driver fell asleep at the wheel, leading to the fatal crash.
Rakesh Arora, a resident of Garima Vihar in Sector 35, Noida, had booked an Uber to travel to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi to catch a flight to Bengaluru for a business meeting. He left his home around 3:50 AM on Saturday, June 21st, 2025. The accident occurred near the toll plaza on the Delhi Noida Direct (DND) flyway.
According to police reports, they received a call around 4:15 AM reporting a person trapped inside a mangled vehicle. Arora and the driver, identified as 32-year-old Sudhir, were rushed to AIIMS. Rakesh Arora was declared dead upon arrival. Sudhir is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Police officials stated that Sudhir is unfit to provide a statement, and the final medical opinion is pending. They also mentioned that no eyewitnesses have been found. A first information report (FIR) has been registered, and the police are investigating the matter.
The family of the deceased has accused Uber of negligence and a lack of communication following the accident. Rakesh Arora's daughter, Shriti Arora, stated that the family was not informed about the crash by Uber or emergency services. Instead, they discovered the accident through a crash notification on Rakesh's iPhone. Upon arriving at the scene, they found him still inside the vehicle, with no one providing assistance.
Shriti Arora also disputes the driver's initial claim that a tire burst caused the accident. She stated that the photographs of the vehicle show no evidence of a burst or flat tire, and that passersby informed her that the driver admitted to falling asleep.
The family is also aggrieved by Uber's silence and lack of support. They claim that the company did not reach out to them after the accident. The Uber app displayed a change in destination from IGI Airport to AIIMS Trauma Centre without explanation. The family also alleges that the driver ended the trip several hours after the crash, and that Uber should have noticed the unusually long halt. Uber only responded after the family shared details of the incident on social media, eventually providing information about insurance coverage.
This incident highlights the dangers of driver fatigue and the importance of ensuring that drivers are well-rested and alert, especially during early morning or late-night trips. It also raises questions about the responsibility of ride-hailing companies in ensuring the safety of their passengers and providing support to the families of victims in the event of an accident. Uber has yet to respond to requests for comment on the incident.
