PM Modi Urges Iranian President Pezeshkian for Immediate De-escalation of Middle East Crisis.

The Middle East remains on edge as the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, entering its tenth day. Amidst escalating tensions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged directly with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, advocating for immediate de-escalation and a return to dialogue and diplomacy.

This direct communication, which occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, underscores India's deep concern over the recent escalations and its commitment to regional stability. Modi conveyed these concerns to Pezeshkian during their conversation, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolutions. "Spoke with President of Iran @drpezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability," Modi shared in a post on X.

The call for de-escalation comes in the wake of heightened military actions, including US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities at Isfahan, Fordow, and Natanz. These strikes, described by US President Donald Trump as a "spectacular military success," have further inflamed the already volatile situation. Iran, while confirming the attacks, has stated that no radiation was released as a result, according to its National Nuclear Safety System Centre. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned the US strikes, holding Washington "fully responsible" for the consequences and terming it a "dangerous war against Iran."

The conflict's origins trace back to June 13, when Israel initiated "Operation Rising Lion," a sweeping offensive targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites. Iran retaliated with "Operation True Promise 3," aimed at key Israeli energy and fuel production sites. The entry of the United States into the conflict has significantly raised the stakes, prompting fears of a wider regional war.

In response to the US strikes, security has been tightened in major American cities, particularly around Jewish and diplomatic locations. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for an emergency meeting to address the escalating nuclear safety and security concerns.

Other nations have also reacted to the escalating crisis, with many echoing calls for diplomacy. Iran's Foreign Minister is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss the situation. Turkey's President Erdogan has accused Israel of attempting to sabotage nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, further complicating the diplomatic landscape.

The human cost of the conflict is also rising. Reports indicate that hundreds have been killed and thousands injured in both Israel and Iran since the initial strikes. In Israel, the airport authority is temporarily reopening airspace to repatriate citizens stranded overseas.

Prime Minister Modi's intervention highlights India's continued efforts to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions and promoting dialogue in the Middle East. India has historically maintained good relations with both Iran and other countries in the region, placing it in a unique position to facilitate communication and understanding. This engagement with President Pezeshkian is a clear indication of India's commitment to regional peace and security, urging all parties to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
