Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricket captain and BCCI president, has once again stated that he has no interest in entering politics, but he remains open to coaching the Indian cricket team in the future. In a recent interview, Ganguly addressed speculation about his future and clarified his stance on both political and coaching roles.

Ganguly, who will turn 53 this July, has consistently dismissed any suggestions of joining a political party, even when presented with the possibility of becoming the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He emphasized that politics is "not his cup of tea" and that he prefers to observe the progress of the country and its states from a distance. "I get the opportunity (to enter politics) every year, but I don't think that's my cup of tea. I have no interest in politics, I just observe because a country and a states' progress is directly attached to people who run it," Ganguly said.

While Ganguly has firmly closed the door on a political career, he has left the door open for a potential coaching role with the Indian cricket team. "I never really thought about it because I got into different roles," Ganguly told PTI, referring to his previous positions as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and later the BCCI. He added, "I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President... We'll see what the future holds. I'm just 53, so let's see what happens. I'm open to it. We'll see where it goes.”

Ganguly's experience extends beyond administration. He served as Team Director of Delhi Capitals between 2018-19 and 2022-24, demonstrating his continued involvement in the coaching and mentoring aspects of the game. He believes his biggest contribution to Indian cricket in his administrative role was promoting women's cricket.

When asked about Gautam Gambhir, the current Indian coach, Ganguly offered a balanced assessment. He acknowledged that Gambhir "started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand," but also noted his recent success in the Champions Trophy 2025. Ganguly emphasized that Gambhir should be given time to grow into the role, particularly with the upcoming tour of England. "I wish him all the best. He's just a year into the job, and this will be an important (England) tour. He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he'll learn, he'll grow, and he'll become better," Ganguly said. He also acknowledged Gambhir's passion and straightforward approach, noting that Gambhir has "a lot of respect for me and the senior players."

Furthermore, Ganguly's biopic, starring Rajkumar Rao, is slated for release by the end of 2026.
