Indian hockey stalwart Lalit Kumar Upadhyay has announced his retirement from international hockey, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned over a decade. The two-time Olympian, known for his exceptional skills as a forward, made the announcement on Sunday, June 22, 2025, coinciding with Olympic Day. While he steps away from the international arena, Upadhyay will continue to play for his domestic team and the Uttar Pradesh Police, where he serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Hailing from Bhagatpur village in Kashi, Uttar Pradesh, the 31-year-old Upadhyay leaves behind a legacy marked by dedication, perseverance, and significant contributions to Indian hockey. He represented India in two Olympic Games, securing bronze medals at both the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2024 Paris Olympics. His achievements also include a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, participation in three World Cups, and two Asian Games, where he won two gold medals and one bronze.

Upadhyay's journey to the pinnacle of international hockey was not without its challenges. In 2008, at the young age of 17, he was unwittingly involved in a TV sting operation that led to the disbanding of the then-Indian Hockey Federation (IHF). This incident threatened to derail his career before it had truly begun. Accused of being used as a pawn in a sponsorship deal controversy, Upadhyay faced immense pressure and considered quitting the sport. However, with unwavering support and a resilient spirit, he persevered.

In a heartfelt social media post, Upadhyay reflected on his journey, stating, "This journey began in a small village, with limited resources but limitless dreams. From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium — not once, but twice — it's been a path full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable pride." He expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, teammates, and Hockey India for their support throughout his career.

Several figures played crucial roles in Upadhyay's resurgence. Coach Parmanand Mishra, who introduced him to hockey, laid the foundation for his skills. Dhanraj Pillay helped him secure a contract with Air India in 2010, providing a platform to rebuild his career. Later, Tushar Khandker facilitated a job opportunity at BPCL, further solidifying his position.

Upadhyay's contributions to Indian hockey extend beyond his medal count. Known for his dodging skills and creative stick-work, he consistently created scoring opportunities for his team. His ability to perform under pressure and his commitment to teamwork made him an invaluable asset to the Indian squad. He played a total of 183 matches for India, scoring 67 goals. In his final appearance, he played four matches of the eight that India played in Europe to close out their 2024-'25 Pro League season. The last match he played was against Australia on June 15.

Lalit Upadhyay's retirement marks the end of an era for Indian hockey. His journey from a small village to the Olympic podium serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the nation. His story exemplifies the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering pursuit of dreams.
