Lorenzo Tangira, 28, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Ramandeep Singh, a 25-year-old security guard of Indian origin, in Auckland, New Zealand. The plea was entered in the High Court at Auckland on June 22, 2025, averting a three-week trial that was scheduled to begin. The crime occurred in December 2023 at Massey's Royal Reserve in West Auckland.
Ramandeep Singh, who had immigrated to New Zealand from India in 2018 to pursue higher education, was working as a mobile patrol officer for Armourguard Security. On the evening of December 17, 2023, he was carrying out a routine task of locking up the car park gate at the Royal Reserve.
According to court documents, Tangira, after spending the night drinking at his residence, walked to the park with a teenage accomplice. The summary of facts presented to the court revealed that Singh was first involved in an altercation with the teenager. Tangira then intervened, grabbing Singh by his vest and repeatedly punching him in the face. Singh, who weighed approximately 46kg, fell to the ground, bleeding from his injuries, and attempted to escape in his work vehicle. The teenager tried to stop him by jumping on the bonnet.
During the chaotic scene, Tangira's hand was caught in the door of the vehicle. Despite this, he and the teenager continued their assault on Singh, inflicting severe injuries, including a broken jaw and significant brain damage. Neighbors reported hearing Singh's cries for help and alerted the police. However, by the time authorities arrived, Singh had died, and the attackers had fled the scene. Singh's body was discovered partially clothed in the bushes, with his belongings missing and his vehicle severely damaged. Police were able to locate Tangira at his home, where they found bloodstains linked to the crime.
The teenager involved in the attack was earlier deemed unfit to stand trial following a hearing in April. Despite this, a judge determined that the teenager was involved in the killing, although their name remains suppressed.
Following Tangira's arrest, he initially sought name suppression, but later abandoned the effort.
Armourguard expressed that their community was "shattered" by the loss of Singh, noting the risks that security personnel face daily. Singh's family, residing in the village of Kotli Shahpur in Gurdaspur, Punjab, India, considered him their only son and the pride of their lives.
The sentencing for Lorenzo Tangira is scheduled for next month.
