The investigation into the honeymoon murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya has taken a new turn with the arrest of two individuals from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, accused of aiding the prime suspect, Sonam Raghuvanshi, in concealing crucial evidence. The Meghalaya Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) apprehended a property dealer and a security guard for their alleged involvement in hiding items, including jewelry, a laptop, and a possible weapon, at an Indore property after the murder.
The property dealer, identified as Silome James, was taken into custody on Saturday night while attempting to flee to Bhopal. He is accused of helping Sonam Raghuvanshi conceal a box containing jewelry, a laptop, and potentially a weapon belonging to her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, who is also implicated in the murder. Police sources indicate that James assisted Sonam in hiding these items at a flat in Heera Bagh Colony, Indore, where she stayed after fleeing Meghalaya.
Following James's arrest, police detained Balvir Ahirwar, a watchman and carpenter, from his village in Ashok Nagar district. Ahirwar was reportedly posted at the Indore flat where Sonam resided after her husband's death. According to reports, Ahirwar allegedly burned the contents of the box, which contained key evidence linked to the murder.
The arrests bring the total number of people held in connection with the case to seven, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha, and three alleged assailants who purportedly carried out the murder in Meghalaya's Sohra.
The SIT's investigation revealed that James had rented the flat to Vishal Chauhan, an associate of the victim, for ₹17,000 per month. Sonam later moved into the flat after returning to Indore. CCTV footage obtained by the SIT purportedly shows James removing a bag from the flat in his car on June 10, further implicating him in the concealment of evidence. Additionally, he is seen installing security cameras at the building shortly after, which police believe may have been an attempt to obscure his actions.
According to police, after several arrests were made in Indore, Sonam is believed to have traveled to Ghazipur on June 8, leaving the bag behind. Two days later, James allegedly used a duplicate key to enter the flat and take away bags, clothes, food items and other belongings.
The police sources said that James led the SIT to the location where he disposed of the items from the box by burning them. However, no traces of the pistol, jewelry, or laptop were found at the site. A forensic team has visited the spot and collected all available evidence.
Both James and Ahirwar were presented before an Indore court and remanded in the transit custody of Meghalaya Police for seven days.
