In anticipation of the significant influx of pilgrims expected for the Nashik Kumbh Mela in 2027, the central government has approved a multi-crore highway overhaul project in Maharashtra. This decision was reached during a high-level meeting in Nagpur, attended by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and other key officials. The primary objective is to upgrade and expand the road network connecting Nashik to major cities and pilgrimage sites, ensuring smooth and safe passage for devotees.
The approved project encompasses the development of nine major roads leading to Nashik, including routes from Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Gujarat, Mumbai, Dhule, and Palghar. These roads are expected to experience heavy traffic during the Kumbh Mela, and their upgrade is crucial for efficient traffic management. A preliminary estimate suggests that the road development will cost approximately Rs 4000 crore, with additional funds allocated for the Nashik Ring Road project.
Key aspects of the highway overhaul include the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Ghoti and Trimbakeshwar, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,700 crore. This highway will significantly improve connectivity to Trimbakeshwar, a major pilgrimage site near Nashik. Furthermore, plans are underway to expand the Nashik-Sinnar stretch and upgrade national highways linking Nashik to other major cities, enhancing regional connectivity.
The Nashik Ring Road project, which has been pending for several years, has also been given the green light. Instructions have been issued to complete the project within 18 to 24 months. Additionally, a new connection between Jalgaon and Sambhaji Nagar is under consideration, which will improve access to Mumbai. Roads leading to other pilgrimage hotspots like Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur will also be upgraded to accommodate increased traffic.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the importance of these road projects, stating that the expanded road network will provide safer facilities for devotees and effectively manage the expected surge in traffic during the Kumbh Mela. He also acknowledged the growing faith of devotees and the anticipated increase in footfall, which prompted him to request central assistance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for infrastructure development.
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is scheduled to commence on October 31, 2026, with the traditional Dhwajarohan ceremony at Trimbakeshwar and Ramkund in Nashik. The event will conclude on July 24, 2028, marking nearly two years of religious observances and gatherings. The upgraded road infrastructure is expected to play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and successful conduct of the Kumbh Mela, facilitating the movement of millions of pilgrims and enhancing their overall experience.
