A distressing incident has come to light in Bengaluru, where a woman was allegedly molested and assaulted by a group of intoxicated men while she was out to purchase groceries. The incident occurred in broad daylight, around 4 pm on Sunday, in the southern part of Bengaluru, specifically near Renuka Yellamma Layout, close to Mailasandra in Anekal taluk, which is situated approximately 30-40 km from the city's central business district.
According to the survivor's account, she was walking to a store when she encountered a group of about four to five men who appeared to be inebriated and were engaged in a dispute on the road. As she attempted to pass by them, the men allegedly began to direct lewd and inappropriate comments toward her. They then proceeded to try and touch her, eventually surrounding her.
The woman has filed a formal complaint with the Bannerghatta Police, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR). The police have invoked sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 74, which addresses assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
Adding a further layer of complexity to the case, it has been reported that the accused men have also filed a counter-complaint against the woman and those who intervened to help her. According to reports, the woman called her friend for assistance, and he allegedly assaulted one of the men who harassed her. The friend, who works as a gym trainer, has been arrested, while the man accused of harassing the woman is still at large.
CCTV footage of the incident has emerged, showing the men following the woman, attempting to touch her, and engaging in conversation with her. At one point, one of the men is seen slapping her as she tries to get away from them. The footage also reportedly shows the men physically assaulting the woman when she resisted their harassment.
This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of recent harassment and assault cases against women in Bengaluru. In light of these events, authorities are facing increasing pressure to enhance safety measures and ensure the protection of women in public spaces. The police have stated that an investigation is currently underway, and they are taking steps to apprehend all those involved.
