The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially addressed Prithvi Shaw's request to leave the Ranji Trophy side, granting him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to represent another state in the upcoming domestic season. This decision marks the end of Shaw's long-standing association with Mumbai cricket, a journey filled with both promise and turbulence.

In a statement released on Monday, June 23, 2025, the MCA confirmed that they had received Shaw's formal request to represent another state as a professional player. After careful deliberation, the association decided to grant the NOC, acknowledging Shaw's contribution to Mumbai cricket. MCA secretary Abhay Hadap stated, "Prithvi Shaw has been an exceptional talent and has contributed significantly to Mumbai cricket. We respect his decision and wish him the very best in his future endeavors."

Shaw, who has represented India in five Tests and six ODIs, expressed his gratitude to the MCA for their support throughout his career. In his letter to the association, he acknowledged the valuable opportunities and unwavering support he received during his time representing Mumbai. He stated that he was presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which he believes will further contribute to his growth and development as a cricketer.

Shaw's decision to seek a new team comes after a challenging period in his career. He was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad last year due to fitness concerns, with the team management informing the MCA that Shaw's body contained 35 percent fat and that he needed rigorous training. Although he made a comeback in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, he was subsequently dropped for the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The decision to drop Shaw from the Ranji Trophy team sparked controversy, with Shaw expressing his disappointment on social media. He posted his List A record, questioning what more he needed to do to prove his worth. Despite the setbacks, Shaw remained determined to revive his career, even playing in the One Day Cup in England for Northamptonshire county.

While speculation arose that Shaw might join neighboring team Maharashtra, officials from the Maharashtra Cricket Association have denied these reports. It remains unclear which state Shaw will represent in the upcoming domestic season.

Shaw's departure from Mumbai marks a significant moment in his career. Once hailed as a rising star, Shaw now seeks a fresh start to revitalize his domestic career. The MCA, while acknowledging Shaw's talent, has made it clear that they cannot "babysit anyone" and that it is ultimately up to the individual player to figure out things for themselves. As Shreyas Iyer, the Mumbai captain, pointed out, Shaw has played enough cricket and has the experience to make the necessary adjustments.

The MCA's decision to grant Shaw the NOC reflects a pragmatic approach, recognizing that sometimes a change of scenery can be beneficial for a player's growth. While Shaw's exit may be seen as a loss for Mumbai cricket, it presents him with an opportunity to prove himself in a new environment and potentially reignite his international career.
