John Abraham is reportedly set to star in Abhishek Sharma's upcoming superhero film, "Munkeeman." This marks a reunion for the actor and director, who previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed film "Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran" in 2018. The new project, backed by producer Mahaveer Jain, is generating buzz as a "high-octane, genre-bending" film that aims to offer a fresh perspective on the superhero genre within Indian cinema.
Sources indicate that "Munkeeman" is envisioned as a large-scale cinematic experience, with the intention of creating something unique and unseen before in Indian cinema. The film is expected to go on floors early next year.
"Munkeeman" is reportedly inspired by the "Monkey Man" incident that occurred in Delhi in 2001. This event involved sightings of a mysterious creature, sparking widespread panic and speculation throughout the city. Abhishek Sharma initially explored this concept in his novel, also titled "Munkeeman," which will now serve as the basis for the film adaptation.
The synopsis of the book describes the "Munkeeman" character as someone who created chaos in Delhi in the summer of 2001. The character disappeared, only to return. The synopsis declares that he is not a monster, but India's "own authentic superhero." The film is expected to retain the core themes of mystery, social paranoia, and redemption, but framed within a stylized superhero narrative suitable for the big screen.
John Abraham has garnered a reputation for taking on intense and physically demanding roles. Currently, he is involved in filming Rohit Shetty's biopic on former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. Abhishek Sharma is also reportedly working on developing a sequel to the comedy film "Garam Masala," potentially reuniting John Abraham with Akshay Kumar.
Besides "Munkeeman," John Abraham has several other projects in the pipeline. These include "Tehran," produced by Maddock Films, Rohit Shetty's Rakesh Maria biopic, and potential revival of the "Ayyappanum Koshiyum" remake. His recent films include "The Diplomat" which was released earlier this year, and "Vedaa". He is also slated to appear in "War 2," scheduled for release in August 2025.
